WETLANDS is the collective term for marshes. swamps, bogs and similar areas in our environment.
Wetlands play a hudge role in the ECOSYSTEM as they prevent flooding by holding water much like a sponge.
By doing so, they help keep river levels normal and filter and purify the surface water. Wetlands accept water during a storm and whenever water levels are high or low they slowly release water. Some scientists call them nature's kidneys because of the natural cleasing functions they preform. Extinctions of flora and fauna will occur if wetlands dry up.
